I just finished a great book on consumer culture, spending, environmentalism and consumption. "Not Buying It" by Judith Levine. Read it, or at least read these quotes from it:
"Teach a man to fish and he will buy a pair of $400 Simms waders. Then, he'll have to go back to work and stay overtime to pay the bill, and he won't have time to wear them."
"UNICEF announces that over half the children in the world- more than a billion kids- suffer extreme deprivation due to war, HIV/AIDS, or poverty. The report notes that global military spending totaled $956 billion this year, while the cost of effectively combatting poverty would be $40-$70 billion."
